José (Jo-say) Theodore (Thee-uh-dore) was drafted by the Montreal Canadiens in 1994 and played with them until March of 2006, winning the Hart and Vezina Trophies in 2002. He spent two and a half seasons with the Colorado Avalanche. José signed with the Washington Capitals in July 2008 where he played the next two seasons. He was awarded the Masterton Trophy in 2010. He played the 2010-11 season with the Minnesota Wild, and then played 2 seasons with the Florida Panthers.

Unsigned goalie has no thoughts about retirement; wants to return to Florida but says two other teams are interested.
Veteran goalie Jose Theodore will turn 37 next month and is still unsigned, but he's been in this situation before, so he's certainly not ready to call it a career.
Theodore admitted his agent has not heard from the Panthers, who seem content to go with 23-year-old Jacob Markstrom as their starter and veteran Scott Clemmensen as his backup. But Theodore said he has received interest from two other unnamed teams.
"The Panthers are still my No. 1 choice. I don't know if the door is closed, but there's been no discussions,'' Theodore said Thursday in an exclusive interview with the Sun Sentinel. "Training camp is still a month away, so I'm not ready to think about [retirement].
"I was in the same situation before I signed in Minnesota before the [2010 season]. There's not a lot of room out there so I'll just wait, stay in shape because that's what I can control. I know I still have options.''
Theodore signed a contract with the Minnesota Wild on Oct. 2, 2010 or five days before their season started in Helsinki, Finland. He ended up having a fine season, going 15-11-3 with a 2.71 goals-against-average.
That led to his two-year stint with the Panthers, where he helped take the Eastern Conference cellar-dwellers to their first Southeast Division championship while snapping an NHL-record 10-season playoff drought.
Theodore, who played his first nine seasons for Montreal, where he was the last goalie to win the Vezina and Hart trophies in the same season (2001-02), was 22-16-11 with a 2.46 GAA for Florida.
However, last year was a disaster for the Panthers as the lockout and a spate of injuries that included Theodore, sent them back to the bottom. Theodore, playing in front of mostly promoted AHLers and rookies, was 4-6-3 with a 3.29 GAA, his worst average since 2006 and far below his 2.68 career mark.
His season ended on March 3 when he tore his groin against Carolina. Although he was physically ready to play by the final week of the season, the Panthers preferred to give Markstrom more experience. Clemmensen and Markstrom also struggled, finishing with 3.67 and 3.22 GAAs, respectively.
"My injury last year hurt my value with me not finishing the season, but look at just two years ago when I played [53] games and we finished first in our division,'' Theodore said. "It's not like I didn't show the league what I can do. Last year was tough for me personally and the team.
"Not knowing when you're going to play was the same for everybody, but still strange. It's a season you want to forget.''
Theodore finds himself in a similar limbo, however, he knows the hockey world takes August off and he's considered one of the top four free-agent goalies remaining, along with Tim Thomas, Ilya Bryzgalov and Johan Hedberg. He may have to begrudgingly accept a backup role.
Theodore isn't sitting around moping. Last week he played golf with tennis great Ivan Lendl, and on Sunday became a youtube.com sensation when TV cameras caught him making a one-handed catch of a ball struck by Rafael Nadal at the Rogers Cup in Montreal while holding a beer and cellphone in the other hand.
Theodore, 14 wins shy of 300 victories, is hoping to make many more catches before he hangs up No. 60.

Former Hart trophy winning goalie Jose Theodore spent just two seasons in Washington, but he left an indelible mark on the community while he was here. Today we celebrate another of his amazing feats– this time in a sport as far from hockey as possible.
On Monday, Theodore was in the stands of the Rogers Cup tennis final in Montreal, where Rafael Nadal faced off against Milos Raonic.
Raonic, down 5-1 in the first set, served to Nadal. The number-three player in the world misplayed Raonic’s serve and watched his return sail dangerously into the stands.
“A high fly ball into the stands…” the commentator began. ” Nice catch!”
The camera then pans to a man wearing a black fedora, shades, and a blue button-up shirt holding the tennis ball up proudly in his right hand. In his left, he clutches both his phone and a beer. The crowd gives the man a loud ovation. The broadcast replays the man’s feat in catch motion.
“That would have been over the first baseman’s head if this was still a baseball stadium,” the play-by-play man continued.
“And he didn’t spill a drop of beer,” the color man exclaimed.
Of course, the he was in fact Theodore, the former Capital, currently an unsigned free agent heading into the 2013-14 season.
If another team is looking for a back-up goaltender who is cool, collected, has cat-like reflexes and a great head of hair in addition to a big heart, he’s your guy.
Clearer video of José catching the tennis ball at the Rogers Cup 8/11/13
Here is a clearer video from Sunday's Rogers Cup in Montreal when José catches the ball in the stands. It begins around 33:05. And keep watching, because during the break they show the catch in slow motion. :)
And the catch in slow motion (so it blurred a bit.) But how adorable is Stephanie next to him, patting him after he made the catch and laughing and clapping. I love them. In the first screen capture, you can see the ball as it's coing down and he's getting ready to catch it. And the announcer mentions how he still had his phone and beer in his left hand and "didn't spill a drop." He said "That was nicely done. Still got the beer and the phone in the left hand. Didn’t flinch. Looking very, very cool."

José Caught a Ball at the Rogers Cup Final 8/11/13
Today was the Rogers Cup men's final in Montreal today. It's well known that José is a fan of tennis and likes to play as well. Well he made an unexpected appearance today during the match when he caught an errant service return by Rafael Nadal. We don't see the catch, but we do see him standing holding the ball up afterwards. It was really neat to see. And Stephanie is next to him laughing about it.
Thanks to Regent St-Cyr for sharing this video with me over on my Facebook fan page (by the way, if you'd like to see at least one photo of José a day, like my Facebook page, José Theodore, NHL Goalie.)
The whole match is on YouTube and José appears at the 35:19 mark.

Here are poor screen captures of the blurry video.

Happy 15th Anniversary to José and Stephanie!
Thanks to fellow fan, Marielle, for reminding me that this summer is José and Stephanie's 15th anniversary together! They first met in June 1998, and their first official photo together was from July 28, 1998 (I believe it was from the opening of Planet Hollywood in Montreal.)
Joyeux anniversaire to José and Stephanie! I wish them nothing but happiness!
