I alluded to this story last week, but I'm just now getting around to blogging it here. If you follow my tumblr (Fuck Yeah José Theodore) then you might've seen this there. But I wanted record of it on this site too, because it shows what a truly nice man he is.
A few weeks ago I saw a tweet that said “I’ll save the small story for offtopic tomorrow, but Jose Theodore is a hell of a good guy.” So I was curious about what he was referring to. Another Theo fan (hi, Val) was also, and she tweeted him and asked about it. He said he’d talk about it on one of his upcoming shows. He has a regular podcast called SuperHappyFunTimes about video games. And they do off-topic stuff now and then, so I listened to it today (thanks to Val for the link.)
This guy goes to quite a few Wild home games, and his seats are near the Wild bench where the non-starting goalie would sit. He said that José is more engaging with the fans than any other goalie he’s seen. He said most goalies will nod or smile at kids, but José will give big smiles, wave, even pose for pictures with kids from behind the glass, etc.
Well, a couple weeks ago this guy was at a game, and there was a fan in front of him that was obviously developmentally disabled. And at the beginning of the 2nd period, José came and sat back in his spot at the end of the bench, and this fan just watched him. So José turned and looked at him and the fan gave him a huge smile and really big wave. In this guy’s words “Theodore looks at him and gives him this great big smile back and waves to him with his glove and the guy turned around, and you could see that it totally made this guy’s night.” He continued a little later “…Theodore took it upon himself, during a game, to essentially make this guy’s..probably month.”
How awesome can one man be? Big hugs to José for making that guy’s life a little brighter. Such a sweetheart.
And just for fun...here he was making this fan extremely happy. So many people have said "I haven't seen you smile that big in a long time." And it's true. It was so awesome. He is so awesome. Period.
José (Jo-say) Theodore (Thee-uh-dore) was drafted by the Montreal Canadiens in 1994 and played with them until March of 2006, winning the Hart and Vezina Trophies in 2002. He spent two and a half seasons with the Colorado Avalanche. José signed with the Washington Capitals in July 2008 where he played the next two seasons. He was awarded the Masterton Trophy in 2010. He played the 2010-11 season with the Minnesota Wild, and then played 2 seasons with the Florida Panthers.
Very sweet story. I'd read it on tumblr, but I'm glad you reposted it.
ReplyDeleteI know Jose and I have to say he is one of the nicest people you could meet. He really does care about his fans. Great site by the way.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for your comment. That means a lot to me! I couldn't believe how nice he was when I met him. I think this is one of the biggest reasons he has such a loyal following...he really is a genuinely nice person.
ReplyDeleteYour very welcome. Jose is really lucky to have such great fans.
ReplyDelete:o) I think we're the luckiest ones though, to have a player like him to cheer for. I hope he's able to play for years to come! I'd love to think of him still playing at 41 like Roli!!
